Gypset Travel ~ Paradise in Mauritius

I discovered this breathtaking island when I was invited to attend the wedding of one of my best friends, and fellow gypsetter, Izzy. She was looking for the most romantic spot in the world, but not the typical escape most seasoned travelers would take. I had heard of the nearby French island Reunion because of its legendary surf break and more recently, their ongoing problems with the Bull sharks.

But little did I know that this very special place is just a short flight from Reunion. So of course I wouldn’t miss my dear friend’s wedding, and having the benefit of hopping over to Reunion to surf for a couple of days (more on that in an upcoming blog 🙂 ) made this travel choice an easy one. So in early October we packed our bags and headed southeast to the Indian Ocean.

For those who have never heard of Mauritius,  it is a bustling yet chill island located about 1,200 miles off the southeast coast of Africa. On the island, residents and visitors enjoy a year-round tropical climate. Culturally, the island is a melting pot of Indian, Chinese, African and European influences, and Mauritius prides itself on its diversity. It is clear how proud they are of such diversity when you see their smiling faces and hear the mix of different languages spoken between the locals.

The island is breathtakingly beautiful– a gypset travel dream. The turquoise ocean, endless rays of sunshine, and white sand beaches are all so stunning. In addition to its natural beauty; Mauritius offers such mouth-watering cuisine, reflective of their French, Indian, Chinese and African cultures (more of which I’ll feature in an upcoming blog).

Mauritius offers its visitors many different outdoor activities including surfing, paddleboarding, scuba diving, and of course some of the best windsurfing in the world! In addition to the many aquatic activities, the island offers many opportunities for sunbathing on its beautiful beaches. Mauritius is truly a mecca for both land and water activities.

Whether it’s for a holiday trip, romantic getaway for two, or a family vacation, Mauritius is a place that everyone can enjoy. As Mark Twain wrote more than 100 years ago, “Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius.” I couldn’t have said it any better!
