When our lives are so often consumed by our jobs, families, and social obligations, among so many other factors of our day-to-day lives. Sometimes we just need an escape. Have you ever thought of a luxury American safari? Typically when we think “Safari” we think of Africa, but there’s a “game reserve” if you will on a gorgeous stretch of land out west. Mustang Monument, outside of Wells, Nevada, is the perfect getaway for someone looking for rustic luxury in the great American west.

Imagine waking up in a spacious tipi with hardwood floors, colorful Native American patterns, and an enveloping mattress to the sound of nothingness. Madeleine Pickens is one impressive woman. She has spent much of her time and energy on the protection and welfare of animals, especially horses. Her efforts helped to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act by the United States House of Representatives. She also arranged and paid for an emergency air evacuation of 800 cats and dogs from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This effort inspired her to continue and increase her valiant work to help protect and rescue animals. Her most current and active initiative is focused on her organization, Saving American’s Mustangs.

Mustangs

Sadly, and surrounded by a lot of contradicting controversy, the wild mustang and burros of the Midwest are under a brutal attack from the Bureau of Land Management. The original plan, which was put into place by the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971, was to have the BLM simply manage wild horse and burro populations in order to ensure that other animals and livestock would be able to live on and share the land too. However, through corruption and the incentive of money, the mustangs and burros are being round-up every year by helicopters and other traumatic methods and then kept in inhuman conditions until they can be auctioned off, adopted, or shipped overseas for slaughter. Also, the mustangs and burro populations have been “managed” to numbers that could eventually lead to their extinction.

Pickens decided to open her wild horse eco-resort in order to help protect and save these precious and iconic animals. There are currently 650 rescued wild horses roaming freely on her 900 square mile preserve. As a guest at Mustang Monument, you have the unique opportunity to see these horses in their natural environment, interact with them, and know that your stay at this eco-resort will directly contribute to the survival of these wild horses.
