Gypset Travel ~ South Tyrol

It was a picture perfect holiday setting and a Christmas to remember. Not typically gypset, but truly a destination any gypsetter would adore.  My love and I were guests at the Hotel Cavallino d’Oro in South Tyrol, which is located at the northernmost point of Italy.  The hotel is located on the medieval market square of Castelrotto, in the heart of the Dolomite Mountains.  Medieval castles, steepled churches, vineyards, band mountain peaks bring this little hideaway to life.

Existing entirely within the Alps, South Tyrol is known for uniting two unlikely cultures. It was originally an Austrian territory, but since the First World War it has been an Italian province. Due to the fact it was first an Austrian territory, the majority of the people speak German, while the rest speak Italian. Due to its seclusion, a small minority still speak their local dialect known as Ladin.

Hotel Cavallino D’Oro dates back to 1326, when it was first mentioned in the local village papers. Although it has been renovated by its current owners Stefan and Susanne Urthaler, there are many rooms that still have original floors, windows, or furniture that dates back 700 years– its rustic charm is undeniable. The Urthalers have owned the hotel for 15 years and pride themselves on friendly and efficient service, as well as supporting the local customs.

The hotel has a limited number of rooms, hosting only 40 guests– providing an intimate and cozy experience. Each room is furnished and decorated in a different manner, but always in Tyrolean style. The hotel offers a bed and breakfast option, as well as half board (breakfast and dinner). We chose the half board and were so impressed by the distinguished wine cellar and the gourmet food.

South Tyrol is a perfect romantic getaway, but an equally fantastic place for a family holiday. No matter the season, visitors can find a plethora of activities in which to partake. From skiing and sledding in the winter to horseback riding, paragliding, and hiking in the spring; there is something for everyone. I dreamed as a child to visit exquisite places like this, but found them mostly in the pages of books. I dreamed of taking my children to places like this, and my husband and I did get them to many U.S. cities and towns and yes, into Canada and even Venezuela once, days filled with love and memories now. I dream of taking my 10, soon-to-be 11, grandkids to places like this… and THESE dreams, I promise, will come true. Thanks for sharing!
