I’m so happy to be back in the Virgin Islands! One of my nephews, who is on his third trip here with me (a gypsetter in the making ;)), asked me how many times I have been to St. John. It occurred to me that I can’t even count the number of times! From trips with friends, getaways sailing around both the British and U.S. Virgin Islands or catching waves on Tortola–the times are countless. Needless to say it is one of my favorite places on earth. With the pristine beaches and gorgeous turquoise water so close to home, what’s not to love?
I make my home base here on the island of St John, where I met my husband. The smallest of the three U.S.Virgin Islands, it is two-thirds national forest preserve thanks to the generous donation from Laurance Rockefeller in 1956. St John is harder to get to, because you need to take a boat from St Thomas, but so worth the extra travel time to enjoy its low-key atmosphere. It’s easy to understand why many people come and never leave. So what do you pack for lazy days and nights in paradise?
