How lucky was I to discover that BMW was holding their Polo Masters in Courchevel during my gypset getaway??!! The prestigious BMW Polo Masters Courchevel was held this year from January 31- February 2. This polo tourney has the distinction of being the highest snow polo tournament in the world (held at 2007m, providing a stunning view of Mont Blanc). Courchevel is one stage of the three-stage BMW Polo Masters. The other matches are held in Val d’sère and Megève.
It was such a privelege to be embraced by the communtiy and treated as a VIP while attending the tournaments in between our ski runs! A special thanks to BMW and the board of tourism in Courchevel as well as my photographer extraordinaire Christian.
The tradition of snow polo debuted in 1985 in St. Moritz, Switzerland, though it is now practiced in many other locations, including Aspen here in the U.S. For those of you unfamiliar with snow polo, it is held on a smaller field than traditional polo. The horses that participate in snow polo are specially trained for the conditions. They wear horseshoes crafted for the snowy ground conditions.
Polo players from Argentina, France, and other European nations participate in 4 seven and a half minute chukkers (play periods), during which the players try to score as many goals as possible. The players are divided into six teams of three for the matches.
Other differences between traditional polo and snow polo include the size and color of the polo ball. In snow polo, the ball is the size of a grapefruit and bright red in color (for visibility). It is more lightweight than the traditional ball, as it is composed of inflatable vinyl.
Not to be missed are the parties that accompany the BMW Polo Masters in Courchevel. Expect lots of champagne, fur, and elegance. VIP tickets to the event are 60€–for which you will also receive a glass of champagne, buffet, and open bar.
