Gypset Travel ~The Surf Lodge Montauk, NY

The Surf Lodge in Montauk (Long Island) is a bohemian destination perfect for those looking to relax and unwind, and of course, to surf! It’s like a little mecca for surfers, artists, and gypsetters. This surfer chic hotel, restaurant and bazaar reopened in 2012 (it was originally built in 1967) under the leadership of Jayma Cardoso; and its appeal continues to grow.

What can I say….we have a lot of boards

The Surf Lodge is so gypset, with a nod to 60’s surf classics. There are 19 light and airy rooms here. They feature modern, ocean-inspired decor designed by Creative Curator, artist/surfer Alexandra Cassaniti and by their invitation only, summer in-house artists like the remarkable Maxwell Snow.

The rooms are on the comfortable side as far as size goes and in true gypset style somewhat minimalist (although they have the most coveted in room beach towels ever), so that your focus is drawn to the salt pond view (each room has one). You can even catch a nap in the hammock outside of your room after a day of surfing.

There is a spacious 2,600 square foot back deck for enjoying a cocktail at sunset–try a mojito or a ginger mint lemonade (made with vodka). Even if you are here for a non-surf excursion, there are plenty of activities you can enjoy including: yoga on the beach, stand up paddle boarding, in-room massage, and more. Just check the daily activities list to see what’s on the agenda. If you do choose to hit Ditch Plains for a surf session, the hotel provides a complimentary shuttle for you and your board!

You’re never too young for the Surf Lodge!

There are three bars and a fabulous restaurant located at the lodge. The Byron restaurant at the Surf Lodge is headed by Australian chef Chris Rendell. It follows the farm to table tradition, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients; and of course, freshly caught seafood! If the Byron name sounds familiar, it’s a nod to the culture and food of Byron Bay, Australia. You will definitely want to try their lobster roll, which is chock full of fresh lobster meat!

What would a little getaway be without a bit of retail therapy? Don’t miss a peak into the Surf Bazaar at the Surf lodge. It’s the first of a group of stores, for this brand, that feature the most desired beach inspired items from beach communities across the globe! Their own collection merges the most beloved vintage beach clothing with beautiful natural fabrics that modify the silhouette, giving the pieces a more current look.
