Gypsetters – Who are They?

One of my very favorite sounds in the world is the full throttle roar of a jet engine, just as you are about to pick up speed for take off; and the feeling of liberation it brings when escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Gypsetters understand that their time is cherished and should be spent on combining leisure with creativity and adventure.

The definition of a gypsetter as described by the writer Julia Chaplin is – “Fusing the ease and carefree lifestyle of a gypsy with the sophistication of the jet set, they are artists, surfers, designers, and bons vivants who live and work around the globe.”  It’s not just about traveling. It’s way more than just a destination. Below are the some of the misconceptions people have of the gypset lifestyle.

1. You need to travel for long periods of time.

Although many gypsetters would not mind a long visit to completely discover a destination, there really is no time limit. Whether you travel on holiday, for a week-long vacation, or for months on end, experiencing new places is the ultimate goal. When you experience all that the world has to offer, you are able to give back to the world with a deeper understanding.

2. You need to stay in 5 star resorts.

Having celebrity appeal is great, but it is not what gypsetters seek. They prefer to adventure off into unknown places that only a local might know. Learning through the high-low cultures of a destination is what they crave.  Always remember– appearances can be deceiving.

3. Gypsetters must have trust funds.

Most gypsetters are not “rich hippies.” Many gypsetters have location independent jobs that don’t require them to stay in a single location. A writer, artist, soulful entrepreneur, or songwriter can work on location. Therefore, they are able to make a paycheck while traveling. Some may save for years for the opportunity to travel, while others may take smaller, more affordable trips throughout the year.

Being a gypsetter is not only about how many voyages you take or to how many far-flung and off the beaten path destinations you journey. It’s about embracing all that this world has to offer, in the hope that you can give back more than you receive. So go  ahead and travel inward on an outward journey, and I am sure you will find that there is a little “gypsetter” in each and every one of you!

I love this. I don’t think I will ever have this type of lifestyle, but I love thinking I could 🙂
